Small distilleries
-
Is home distillation legal in the Czech Republic?
It is illegal to own a still or distillery, and it is a criminal offence to moonshine alcohol in the Czech Republic.
-
I read somewhere that I can distill a small amount of distillate at home for my own use, is this true?
Distilling at home (moonshining) is illegal in the Czech Republic and is a criminal offence in this case. The stills we manufacture are destined for countries where home distilling is allowed.
-
Is the sale of distillation equipment officially reported and registered?
Yes. Every sale, relocation and manufacture of a still or apparatus is reported to the customs office and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic.
-
Where and how do I report that I have inherited, acquired or found a still?
To the customs office in your district and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic in Prague.
-
How long is the deadline for declaring a home distillery acquired in the Czech Republic or in the EU?
Usually 5 working days, but we recommend reporting it immediately after the acquisition of the still.
-
I am a citizen of Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and other EU countries. Can I buy a still?
Yes, we are allowed to sell stills to such countries and we are required to report it to the customs office and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic.
-
I am a foreign citizen, distillation of alcohol is allowed in our country. May I ask what size still is best for me?
We have a choice of stills of many volumes. There is a rule of thumb - if you have up to 300 kg of mash per year, a boiler up to 75 litres is sufficient, if you have up to 600 kg of mash per year, get a still from 75 litres to 150 litres.
-
Are your stills safe to operate?
Yes, we are certified and have been supplying these small stills all over the world for many years.
-
Which is better - a single-jacketed boiler or a double-jacketed boiler?
As far as the quality of the distillate is concerned, the result is always the same from both options and depends mainly on the quality of your mash. A single-jacketed still distils for a shorter time and the raw material always needs to be stirred. A double-jacketed still takes a little longer to distil than a single-jacketed one, but has a much longer life. With double jacketed boilers there is no need to stir the mash.
-
Which series among the small stills has the best features and quality?
If you want to produce the best pear brandy, apple brandy or whisky, be sure to choose the Aroma Special range. We will be happy to introduce you to its advantages, please contact us. However, the key is a good mash from ripe fruit.
-
How does the Aroma Special series differ from the standard double-jacketed boilers? Is it just the shape?
Yes, they differ in shape and design, in the sophistication of the entire device and in the incorporation of many improvements that affect the spirits. Above all, however, the special shape of the steam domes that sit on the lid of the boiler. The products of the Aroma Special series are among the premium distillation equipment.

Grower distilleries and commercial distilleries
-
Can I, as an individual, start a grower distillery?
Yes, grower distilling is a service to the people (fruit growers) and a licensed trade can be set up for this business.
-
Can I build a grower distillery at home?
Yes, subject to the conditions and approval of the relevant authorities (customs, building authority, Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic)
-
Who issues a permit to operate a grower distillery?
The Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, the customs office, the tax office, the trade licensing office and, where applicable, the building authority.
-
How many litres of alcohol can a person burn in a year in a grower distillery?
The conditions are different for each country, and in some they are even prohibited. In the Czech Republic it is 30 litres a.a. for one household (that is 60 litres of 50 per cent distillate)
-
Can I distill any raw material in grower distillation mode?
No, just fruit from our own orchards, from our own trees.
-
How long does it take to build a grower still?
This usually takes 2 - 4 months from ordering the technology.
-
How much space do I need for a grower still?
It can usually be built in a 4 x 4 m footprint, but we recommend an extra space for handling and for customers.
-
How about the ceiling height? Is it important to have a high ceiling to build a still or a commercial distillery?
Yes, a minimum of 2.5 to 3 m depending on your chosen technology.
-
Can I sell distillate produced under the grower distillation regime?
No, sale of alcohol/distilled spirits produced in the regime of grower distilling is prohibited.
-
So how can I sell alcohol?
There are various concessions for selling alcohol, you have to own a fruit distillery or have alcohol distilled at a licensed distillery, have a tax warehouse and there many other rules you need to follow.
-
So can I build my own fruit distillery?
Yes, but it involves a lot of long processes and paperwork to get a licence and meet the requirements of the competent authorities. After that, however, there are only pleasant things and worries waiting for you 😊.
-
How many litres of spirit can I burn in my fruit distillery?
As much as you want. It depends on how much principal you deposit with the tax authorities and the number of matching stamps provided.
-
What should I do if I want to build a still or a commercial distillery?
Contact us, we will suggest a technology and prepare a quotation. We will design the layout, create drawings and start production. By the time you secure the permits, we will have been done manufacturing the technology and we are getting ready for the installation.
-
What is the lifetime of distillation boilers?
The lifetime of the technology is not given in years, but in litres of alcohol. We service our technology regularly, the first service is usually after 70 000 litres of distilled alcohol. The first maintenance usually only involves tightening joints, changing seals, cleaning, etc. The second maintenance is more demanding and takes place after another 50 000 distilled litres.
-
How about the warranty?
2 years as standard, the warranty can be extended up to 4 years at an additional cost.
-
Are there any differences between the products and the photos on your website?
Yes, there are, we keep improving the design of our products and therefore the products may differ in detail from the images on the website.
Distillation columns
-
Can I buy a custom-made column from you?
Yes, we enjoy building new columns and making atypical assemblies. We do, however, need to meet certain criteria.
-
How does the distillation column work? Doesn't it have to be distilled twice like with a double boiler system?
No it does not, distillation boilers with a rectifier and dephlegmator do not require it. In the rectification column, the distillation takes place through individual stages.
-
Can I use the distillation column for both grower distillation and fruit distilleries?
Yes, both options are permissible.
-
I am not an expert and distillation columns look complicated. Will I be able to operate them?
Yes, we will train you, we have detailed instructions ready. Plus, the controls look complicated, but work mostly automatically.
-
What is a single boiler system?
A single boiler system consists of a distillation boiler, where the heating of the raw material takes place, and a rectification column, where reprocessing with enrichment of the alcohol component takes place. A second distillation is not necessary and therefore the distillation time is shorter by the second distillation time.
-
What is a double boiler system?
Distillation takes place in two boilers and in two steps. The first step is distillation in the main boiler. This boiler is is usually larger and is used for the mash. The second step is distillation in the so-called rectification boiler, which is always smaller. First, the mash is distilled, the heads is produced and then re-distilled in the rectification boiler.
-
Which type of system is better for the resulting distillate? Single boiler or double boiler?
Nowadays, the most commonly manufactured and assembled type is single boiler system / distillation column. Due to the constant rise in energy prices, this option is more economical to operate and the distillation costs are up to 40% lower compared to a double boiler system.
-
Which system makes tastier and more aromatic spirit? Single or double boiler?
With the right rectification stage settings, perfect dephlegmation and continuous heating, you can distill an aromatic spirit with a subtle flavour from a single boiler system. The spirit (or distillate) from distillation columns is very rich in aroma, but more alcoholic than from double-boiler systems. For traditional Czech slivovitz, however, we recommend the double boiler system, so we offer both versions.
-
Is it important to have a copper distillation column?
Yes, and not just the column. We manufacture stills, lids, columns and pipes always from food grade copper with 99.9% copper content. The coolers are stainless steel right down to the spirit gauges on the spout.
-
Why is copper so important?
The copper content plays an important role in the distillation equipment, giving the spirit its flavour and aroma. The catalytic properties of copper have a very favourable effect on the resulting distillate and prevent the formation of undesirable substances.
-
How strong a distillate / spirit am I able to distill on the distillation column?
Certainly with a higher ethanol content than in a two boiler system. With good mash, proper distillation column setup, and reflux, this can result in distillate up to 80%.
-
How tall are the distillation columns and how much space do I need for a distillation column?
The question is whether you want just the distillation column or the complete technology including vacuum suction, etc. Also the boiler volume and the number of rectification stages play a big role. The smallest 100 - 200 litre columns can fit into a 2 x 2 m space with a ceiling height of 2.3 - 2.5 m. The largest 500 litre columns with a three-stage column and catalyst are suitable for buildings with a floor plan of 4 x 4 m and a ceiling height of at least 3.1 m.
-
If I order a distillation column, can I build it myself? Or do I need you to do the assembly?
Well, it depends. Simple columns without vacuum suction, gauges, connections to waste and water source or a chimney, you are able to install yourself. We routinely ship these distillation columns to all corners of the world and customers can handle the installation themselves. If it is a large technology and a complete delivery, we send an installation team to your site and commission the equipment, including training.
-
Which column would you recommend?
We produce many types and volumes. First you need to understand how much spirit you plan to distill and choose the volume of your boiler accordingly. You also need to consider whether you will be distilling fruit mash or gins or whiskies. When making an enquiry, always give us these parameters and we will be happy to respond with a quotation.
-
Which type of heating is best? Is electricity too expensive?
Today, all types of energy are costly. Our electric heating technology is state-of-the-art with heat transfer rates of up to 90%. Gas heating uses less produced heat for the distillation proper, about 60%. Heating with solid fuels (wood) does not allow efficient control and compromises the cleanliness of your working environment.
-
